Located in the heart of Shymkent, the spring of Koshkar Ata River is an extraordinary natural and spiritual area.

Koshkar Ata River begins its course not far from Shymkent train station. It bears the name of a wise and educated man, whose mausoleum can be seen on the river banks.

The river acquired in 2010 the status of protected natural area of local importance. Then, substantial rehabilitation and remediation works were done between the river spring and Ordabassy Place, allowing a pleasant quiet walk of about 1.5 km along the banks.
Legend tells that waters of Koshkar Ata River have healing properties. That’s why many people go there to pray, to fill bottles and to bathe all year long. Sadly, the very pure spring water quickly loads wastes and wastewaters, becoming unrecognizable as soon as it leaves the developed area.

The access to the spring of Koshkar Ata is protected by a gate to limit indecent behaviour in this sacred place. However, the person in charge near the grid willingly opens it to pilgrims or tourists with wise intentions.

The “Saïl Koshkar Ata” festival, which celebrates the spring-time and purebred sheep breeding, took place on the banks of the river in March 2016 for the first time since 150 years. It should be celebrated every year from now.
